Rhythms of Labour: Music, Work And Capitalism

In this presentation, Marek Korczynski, professor of sociology of work at Nottingham University, will examine the fractured relationship between music and work, with a focus on how structures of capitalism have affected the meaning and role of music in manual workplaces. Whether for weavers at the handloom or factory workers on the assembly line, music has often been a key texture in people’s working lives. A musical journey from the singing cultures of pre-industrial occupations, to the impact and uses of the factory radio, via the silencing effect of industrialisation.
