The comedy team of Jiri Voskovec and Jan Werich were a much loved and highly influential phenomenon in Czechoslovakia and abroad. Their theatre and films are an improvisational stew of vaudeville, surrealism and poetic comedy. The duo's wildly inventive physical comedy and word play and their serious lampoon of 30's world politics, bring them in the vicinity of the Marx Brothers and the Popular Front films of Clair, Renoir and King Vidor. They created intellectual political theatre and cinema that have a timeless revelance and freshness.
